greyhounds

when i was little, my family had a dentist named dr. mattingly. he raised and raced greyhounds in his free time, and he would invite us to visit the puppies, because greyhounds need exposure to people as they are quite timid in general. i have good memories of going to play with the soft-faced little puppies, who would eventually grow to be dogs so fanatical about racing that they, if given the chance, will run themselves to death.

i always thought that it was sort of strange that you went to play with your dentist's dogs.

maybe partly because i could never imagine my own dentist (a loud, toothy red-headed lady named doctor german, who looked kind of like veda's uncle's girlfriend from my girl 2 -- http://www.castpartynyc.com/Cast_Party_Newsletter/061705/Images/Christine-Ebersole.jpg), who kept weird educational magazines in the waiting room and pulled so many of my teeth, inviting us over to play with her dogs.

phew. sorry for the long comment. i love this drawing.
